Wat Phra Mahathat Ayutthaya

Information and Directions:

Probably the best known temple in Ayutthaya, Wat Phra Mahathat is part of the World Heritage site in the old city. Apart from the famous Buddha head in the roots of a Bodhi Tree the site is somewhat disappointing. Most of the original chedi and brickwork are decayed and there only a few Buddha statues that have survived the test of time.

The entrance is advertised at 200 Baht for foreigners but on my last visit in January 2010 I got in for 50 baht. Personally I am not sure the site warrants such a high price tag!

Opinion:

Not a great site but worth visiting if you want to get a photograph of the Buddha head in the tree roots. Usually very busy since all package tours around Ayutthaya start here.
